What do you do at Catalyst?

I get to drive the big, manly suburban with the bigger, manlier trailer
dragging behind it. Then I make a big show of carrying around lots of
heavy equipment without breaking any of it, and order some other people
around. Then I do it all again in reverse at the end of the night. All
in all, not a bad gig.

Contact me if you…

…Would like to help with setup or teardown at the Eureka site. Come on, you know you want to. All the cool kids are doing it.

Top 5 Signature Themes of talent»

» Adaptability- I don’t really make plans, I just kind of deal with things as they
happen, and usually keep in mind that it’ll all be okay. It’s nice
because I’m fairly difficult to upset (unless you’re a piece of
technology that doesn’t work as advertised). If the plan has to change,
good; the plan was silly anyway. Just don’t ever come at me with a
deadline. I’ll run screaming into the night. Seriously.

» Developer- Low self-esteem was (is?) my modus operandi for quite a few years, so
I’m a fan of helping others see how valuable they are. I also like
making people laugh, particularly at themselves or at me. It’s a stress
reduction technique, so I’m told. I like easing tension.

» Empathy- This kinda ties in with the one above. I’m a good listener because I
can often feel the emotion behind what someone is trying to
communicate. It also makes it easier for me to not judge others
because, while I may not agree with their actions or reactions, I can
usually understand them. This is really useful when other drivers do
seemingly illogical and reckless things.

» Intellection- I’m a thinker… sort of. On the one hand I do like to mull over
things, running over ideas or phrases or concepts again and again over
a long period of time, trying to fully understand them. On the other my
strong adaptability often has me shrugging and not worrying about it if
I don’t quite get it. Debate is one facet of this strength I neither
have nor enjoy. While I do like to look at things logically, I can’t
fully suspend emotion in a conversation. Maybe blame the empathy for
that one.

» Connectedness- Everything happens for a reason. Of course my faith is the center of
that belief. It’s not just some unknown mysterious force that binds all
humanity together, it’s God. We’re all his children and what we do
matters. Every decision we make has far-reaching consequences we’ll
never even see. God is the ultimate adapter and whenever we deviate
from his good plans for us, he’s quick to provide a way back in, even
if we never realize it.

Education »

Uh, yeah, about that… I’ve got my GED and a few scattered units from
community college, but school has never really been something I enjoy
at all so until the wife graduates and I figure out some kind of career
path that doesn’t make me shudder with abject horror, I’ll continue
sidestepping that particular landmine.

Family Info

Ridiculously beautiful wife, and that about covers it for up here. My
mom and sister live in Sonoma County, the rest of my family strewn
about California and Nevada, with a couple rebellious branches off in
Texas and Florida.

What are you passionate about?

I’m not sure. I mean I’m not certain there’s any one brand of ministry
that speaks to me above others. I’m not an environmentalist, but I try
to recycle and not litter and all in all treat the planet well. I find
crime and poverty tragic but it doesn’t pull at my heart any more than
the many other sad truths of this world. I suppose in general I’m just
passionate about trying to do the right thing, trying to be holy, what
God wants me to be. I suppose there is one thing I’m big on though, and
that’s making others feel loved and appreciated. If everyone
understood, really understood, how valuable and precious both they and
every other person across the globe really is, I think it’d solve a lot
of problems.

What are you scared of?

Nothing. Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger, anger
leads to hate, hate leads to suffering. Course spiders are creepy. Cool
and very interesting on TV or in a book. Still creepy though.

What’s your day-job?

I can occasionally be found hanging out in the kitchen of Arcata’s
Porter Street Barbeque, making Tristin large chicken sandwiches with
provolone. And magically making their supply of lemon berry cake
disappear.

What are your hobbies?

Nerd stuff mostly. I love me some video games, but not just the
“trendy” games like Halo. I get into the really nerdy roleplaying ones
too. Yes, I have at different times been jacked into WOW (World of
Warcraft). I also enjoy reading fantasy such as the Pern novels or
Forgotten Realms. I also enjoy tabletop roleplaying games, Dungeons and
Dragons being the big one. Tragically I’ve found no one to play with up
here. On the flip side I also enjoy physical activity, whether it be
running or working out or pickup games of football or capture the flag
or whatever, and oddly also including back-breaking manual labor. Of
course, all things in moderation. Except video games.

Favorite movies?

All those big tough manly warrior movies:

» Braveheart

» Gladiator

» Dragonheart

» King Arthur

» Kingdom of Heaven

» Troy

» The Last Samurai

» Wolverine

» The Terminators

» 300

. . . course my favorite movie is A Walk to Remember but… it’s manly too… in a different sorta way.
