In light of the recent earthquake devastation, below are a few ways you can help both locally and abroad:
Help in Haiti
Bread for the World has organized a list of Christian relief organizations that maintain the highest levels of financial responsibility and accountability. This page will offer some quick facts, specific prayers, and a list of agencies you can donate to, or volunteer with.
Help in Eureka
Jason Hervin from Catalyst works for the Humboldt County chapter of the Red Cross. He has identified the family in greatest need in Humboldt. Here is a letter from Jason about how to help:
Dear Catalyst,
This is regarding a family, the Porters, you may have seen in the news Sunday evening. Dana, his wife, and son lost their home and nearly all their belongings in the earthquake. They were according to the Fire Dept. the worst damaged house they responded to. With their second child on the way they have many needs to be filled, especially after losing everything. Below is how they were affected:
Before attending the service this past Sunday evening I had responded to a house destroyed by the earthquake with the Red Cross to a call on Humboldt Hill. This was a heartbreaking case where the owners, a young family with a three year old and the wife 8 months pregnant, lost everything. The house rocked off its foundation, the supporting beams cracked, a fire broke out in parts of the house, and nearly all their belongings broken. He also had three dogs, one of which died when the Chimney collapsed on it and the two remaining are injured.
It was very evident that Dana and his family do a lot for their neighbors and their friends. While we were there many neighbors and friends came by to offer any help they could, and comfort the family. This is a hard-working family that could really use your help. Some possible needs they have:
- Prayer
- Free labor; cleaning, re-building, and others,
- Donations of children’s supplies
- Food
- Money, biggest need.
- Possible Vet operations for his dogs.
