DAVID: The Shadow Side of Greatness
David is a man often held up as an example in sermons, and many children grow up hearing stories of his greatness. Yet the scriptures do not paint as glowing a picture of David as we tend to see. Everyone in his life, his closest relationships and his most bitter enemies, all had mixed takes on the man. Respected and feared, loved and hated, David is a complex character. Perhaps we do damage to the real story of David when we gloss him over with uncritical praise. Perhaps as Israel's "greatest" king, his failures highlight something deeper than a 'hero-story', perhaps his life- accomplishments and character flaws- point to something better. Maybe they point to an even better king who was yet to come.
